Guard
Kevin Johnson
On Feb. 26, 1988, the
Suns made a blockbuster five-player trade with Cleveland that
included rookie Kevin Johnson. Upon arriving in Phoenix, KJ
redefined the playmaker position, becoming only the fourth player
in NBA history to average 20 points and 10 assists over three
separate seasons. Johnson also teamed up with Tom Chambers to help
lead the Suns to the third biggest turnaround in league history,
from just 28 wins in 1987-88 to 55 in 1988-89. The Suns also
reached the playoffs in each of the guard's 10 full seasons in the
Valley, playing in the Conference Finals on three occasions and the
NBA Finals in 1993. During his Phoenix career, KJ averaged 18.8
points and 9.6 assists, and was named to three All-Star teams and
Dream Team. Announcing his retirement earlier this season, Johnson
ranks among Suns all-time leaders in nearly every statistical
category, both regular season and playoffs.
