Rockets sign second-year guard Lucas

Impressive week in Las Vegas earns guard a three-year deal

HOUSTON -- John Lucas III turned heads with his impressive play in last month's Toshiba Vegas Summer League.

He also earned himself a spot on the Rockets' roster.

The Rockets signed the free agent guard to a three-year deal on Friday in an effort to deepen their point guard position.

The 5-foot-11 point guard from Oklahoma State will likely end up competing with Greek guard Vassilis Spanoulis for the backup role behind starter Rafer Alston.

Lucas, whose father John Lucas also played for the Rockets, averaged 23 points and 7.6 assists in five summer-league games in Las Vegas.

He drew interest as a free agent from several team after his week, but wanted to play for his hometown team.

Lucas, 23, briefly played in 13 games with Houston last season on a pair of 10-day contracts. He averaged 2.3 points.
