Hispanic Heritage Month 2009

September 18, 2009

ORLANDO -- The Orlando Magic is proud to celebrate September 15 – October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic-Americans have made historic contributions to the growth of our nation and to the prosperity of our region. We are everyone’s team and wouldn’t be who we are without our vibrant Hispanic community. Hispanic culture and history have enriched our community and our economy and we are proud to pause and reflect on the impact Hispanic-Americans have made on our way of life.

As Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor took her place as the first Hispanic justice to serve on the Supreme Court, our country took another step towards our journey to become more inclusive. Sotomayor’s ascent to serve on the nation’s highest court is something all Americans can be proud of. Her story serves as a reminder to us all that the enduring principles of freedom, equality and opportunity remain true catalysts for success and what our nation and our community values most.

The contributions of our Hispanic community are both deep and wide. Organizations like the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund (HBIF) have worked tirelessly to promote economic change on behalf of the community they serve and are shining examples of our collective efforts to Be One. Their efforts and the efforts of countless other organizations and leaders who promote economic opportunity in Central Florida make up the backbone of our community. Our region has benefited from Trailblazers past and present. Former U.S. Senator Mel Martinez, City Commissioner Tony Ortiz, and County Commissioner Mildred Fernandez have offered their lives to public service and paved the way for future generations of Hispanic leaders and entrepreneurs.

In her nomination speech Associate Justice Sotomayor reflected our organization’s core belief best when she said, “I stand on the shoulders of countless people.” Our team stands on the shoulders of the entire Central Florida community. We understand that working together through many different voices, backgrounds and cultures is where our greatest opportunity for success lies. Legendary moments can happen when we all work together to Be Magic.
