Rookies Giselle and Lynn received two of the more dramatic changes as Lynn went from blonde to red hair and Giselle went from a light brown color to red hair with blonde highlights.
“I’m really excited for my new red hair,” Lynn said during the coloring process. “My natural hair color is dark brown, but I’ve had blonde hair for as long as I can remember. It’s going to be fun having a new look.”
Giselle was also thrilled for the much-anticipated “Makeover night.”
“I’ve been really looking forward to getting my makeover done for the last month,” she said. “I’ve been told I was going to go blonde and then red and when I got here, they had some pages from magazines with examples of what my hair was going to look like. Prior to tonight, my hair had never been touched. I was about 98 percent excited and two percent nervous.”
In addition to getting hair color and cuts, and sneaking in some quality team bonding time, the girls had their make-up done and also learned about creating “theater make-up” for their game-night looks.
“Makeover night is a lot of fun and I think we always learn something – especially the rookies,” said four-year veteran Brandi. “I remember when I started as a Honeybee, that knowing how to make my make-up look performance ready was one of my biggest concerns. They teach us how to make our look more glamorous.”
Honeybee Manager and Choreographer Ashley Deaton worked with H2O stylists to create the most glamorous look for each girl.
“This process started with me giving the stylists pictures of all of the girls,” Deaton said. “We worked together to come up with the best look for each girl. We wanted to make sure their hair is the right color that flatters them the most and that they have the cut that best fits their face shape. We want them to look and feel as glamorous as they can going into the season.”
The Honeybees weren’t the only ones excited for “Makeover Night” as the H2O stylists were thrilled to be a part of the process.
“Our clients love saying that their hairdressers do ‘Honeybee hair’,” said Laura Phillips, general manager of H2O Salon & Spa in Metairie. “We love coming to the games and having the opportunity to reach out to a whole new group that we were not a part of previously. Obviously, we have our own culture and community in the salon business, but we are now a part of basketball community and the Hornets family.”
As the Honeybees gear up for the new year, Deaton feels the partnership with H2O has helped them take a big step in the best direction for the squad.
“It’s important for us to have a great hair and makeup partner because the girls develop a relationship with their stylists and trust them,” she said. “H2O has been awesome for us. They give the girls some great advice and tools and help them really refine their look. The girls always feel their best when they hit the court. “
